What are the best ingredients for beard balm? ›

Beard balm is made up of four core ingredients: beeswax, a type of butter, a type of carrier oil, and an essential oil. Each of these ingredients perform specific functions, and without one, your beard balm won't work.

Just use two parts beeswax and three parts oil for a simple recipe, or one part beeswax, one part solid coconut oil and two parts oil.

For beard oil, we recommend an essential oil dilution rate of between 1-2%. That means for every 30ml of your carrier oil you'll need to add between 6 and 12 drops of essential oil.

If you want more control and hold to tame flyway hairs, beard balm may be the choice for you. If you are looking for deep conditioning to soften and promote better healthy beard growth, but still want a light hold to style your beard, beard butter may be the the right choice.

Carrier oils are the primary component of beard oils, vital for hydrating both the beard and the skin underneath. These oils are not just for moisturizing; they're also for taming and styling your beard. I typically make my salve with an oil to beeswax ratio of 3:1 or 4:1, which results in a thick but still easily spreadable texture. For example, in my latest batch I had about 100 mL of melted beeswax so I added about 300 mL of oil.

Take a small amount of balm from the tin and emulsify it in your hands. Scoop more as you see fit. Depending on how wild your beard is and how long it is, a little balm may go a long way or you may need a big scoop. Run Balm through the beard, making sure to apply it evenly.
