Along with its needed effects, fluoride topical (the active ingredient contained in Colgate Total Advanced Clean) may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.
Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur while taking fluoride topical:
Sodium fluoride in drinking water or taken as a supplement does not usually cause any side effects. However, taking an overdose of fluoride may cause serious problems.
Sores in the mouth and on the lips (rare)
Stop taking fluoride topical and get emergency help immediately if any of the following effects occur:

It has been shown that fluoride ion has potential to induce chromosome aberrations in cultured human and animal cells at doses much higher than those to which humans are exposed. In vivo data are conflicting.[Ref]

In some rare cases (less than 1 in 1,000 users) allergic (hypersensitivity) reactions can occur, such as rash, itching, swelling, and redness. Burning oral sensation has also been reported. If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor, dentist, or pharmacist.
All ingredients found in the Colgate Total are safe. The active ingredient, stannous fluoride, used in the Colgate Total is recognized as safe by the US Food and Drug Administration, when used according to the Drug Facts label.

Starting late in 2018, we introduced a new Colgate Total toothpaste that delivers more benefits than the original formula with triclosan, and as of January 2019 we no longer use it as an ingredient.
In the case of acute fluoride toxicity, one or a combination of the following symptoms such as gastric disturbances (nausea, vomiting occasionally with blood, abdominal pain, diarrhea, weakness, and hypocalcemia) are observed. These symptoms result in generalized or localized muscle tetany especially of hand and feet.
When swallowed, fluoride is absorbed via the stomach and intestines, and passes rapidly round the body in the bloodstream. Peak blood levels appear in 30-60 minutes after swallowing.
However, excessive fluoride exposure in infants and children does warrant further exploration, especially in areas where fluoride levels are naturally high. Potential downsides of fluoride include fluorosis, an increased risk of osteosarcoma, and impaired brain development in infants and children.
The most common side effect of fluoride is fluorosis (fluoride-induced tooth discoloration). People with fluorosis develop spots on their teeth that can range from light white to dark brown. These spots typically occur during tooth development, usually in children under the age of 6.

It is also recommended for individuals with a dry mouth or taking medications that cause dry mouth, as saliva plays a crucial role in protecting the teeth against decay.
