How do you break in dealer boots? ›

One of the most common ways to break in your new safety boots is by wearing them around the house. Do this daily for ten minutes or so at first, and gradually increase the time spent wearing them. You should do this for a while before you wear them for a full day's work.

According to Smith, while a cheaper pair under $100 probably won't last long (and will eventually force you to go out and buy another pair), paying between $100 to $300 will likely get you a quality boot. He recommends brands such as Rieker, Clarks and Rockport, which, in his experienced eye, balance price and quality.

Ideally, you want them to feel snug and supportive. Avoid pinching, pain, and pressure—if they're uncomfortable; you might need to adjust the size up. Alternatively, a loose steel toe boot can cause its own set of issues. Avoid letting your foot slip and slide around inside a boot that's too large.

Don't wear your boots daily

While wearing new boots regularly can speed up the break-in process, excessive wearing can actually lead to pain, discomfort, and premature wear and tear for the boots. Give your feet some rest and let the shoes adjust gradually rather than trying to force it too quickly.

Generally speaking, there should be about one finger's width of space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. Another way to check this is to slip a finger between the heel of your foot and the heel of your shoe. There should be just enough space for your finger to fit nice and snugly.

If your feet are a narrow width (and no narrow sizes are available to purchase), you may need to order a 1/2 size smaller than your normal size. If your feet are a wide width (and no wide sizes are available to purchase), try ordering a 1/2 size larger than your normal size. Your feet may be two different sizes.

A well-fitting work boot should be a little roomy. Boots that fit too snugly will constrict your foot and make you uncomfortable at work. Also, most people's feet get slightly swollen as they go through the workday, so you'll want to give them a little bit of room to expand.

You should be able to wiggle your toes inside the toe box (the front of the shoe). To see if you have enough room, slide your foot forward so your toes are just touching the end of the unlaced boot. In this position, you should have a finger's width (about ½") between the base of your heel and the boot.

Boots should not be too loose or too tight on your foot. The best fit should be snug (but not tight) around the whole of your foot, with enough room to move your toes and a maximum of a quarter to a half-inch of slippage at the heel.

Put on two pair of socks and put on the wet boots. (Extra sock layers are essential, because as the leather dries, it shrinks. Wearing two pair of socks trains the leather to leave you a little wiggle room for everyday wear.) Wear your boots for a full day.
