Why This Recipe Works

My cute hubby and I make this 4 ingredient hash brown casserole every year on Valentine’s Day to accompany our surf-n-turf dinner. We also make it for dinner side dishes throughout the year, as well as breakfast sides.

Why this recipe is a family favorite:

  • The best part is that it is super easy to throw together, requiring a mere 4 ingredients and a single pan.
  • This is the perfect dish to serve to a large crowd.
  • It can be served as a comforting side dish or main dish for dinner, or for breakfast.
  • Done in an hour from start to finish!

Add this to your next dinner or holiday table and you won’t be sorry!

Recipe Ingredients

Hash browns– Stacking hash brown patties works well, or choose between shredded, diced or country-style potatoes.

Butter – Use unsalted butter to counter balance the seasoning salt in this delicious recipe. Decrease the amount of butter by half if desired, for a slimmer recipe.

Heavy whipping cream – The high fat content in cream will produce a delicious cassserole, but you may replace heavy cream with milk to slim the recipe down.

Seasoning salt– Lawry’s seasoned salt is my go to seasoning for these potatoes but use any blend that is on hand, especially if you want to lower the sodium intake.

FAQ About Hash Browns

What type of potatoes are best used to make hash browns?

You want to use a starchy potato for making hash browns and avoid red potatoes that have a higher moisture content, so they won’t crisp up like other potatoes.

How do you get hash browns to stick together?

There are a couple of things to do to help hash browns to stick together. When you slice your own potatoes, you can soak the potatoes to remove some of the excess starch. Whether you soak them or not, don’t skip removing the excess water from the potatoes by taking some paper towels to dry them. A binding agent, like an egg can also help to keep the potatoes to fry together.

Can hash brown casserole be frozen?

Because this recipe contains dairy in the form of heavy whipping cream, I do not recommend you freeze it unbaked. Prepare the dish, then allow it to cool completely before freezing. Wrap pan in plastic wrap and/or foil to keep the air out. When you are ready to serve your dish, allow the baking dish to come to room temperature, then bake as directed.

Why are my frozen hash browns not crispy? ›

A: Hash Browns or French fries are usually good in the freezer for 4-8 months at zero degrees F. While still cold, if they are soft to the touch that means they have lost the crispy texture you'll expect of a quick frozen potato.
