A few great things about teeth whitening kits: They're effective, easy to use, and a lot cheaper than going to the dentist for a standard teeth whitening treatment.

However, there's always a risk when you perform dental treatments at home that are best handled by a pro. In this case, leaving your whitening strips on longer than directed.

"Be careful using whitening strips guys," TikTok user @_itsmemari_ says in a video, revealing that sleeping with whitening strips on landed her at the doctor's office.

After falling asleep with the strips applied to her teeth, she reveals that she had to use "numbing oil" just to get a good night's rest from the pain. She mentioned that she's unable to eat or drink and cold air against her gums makes it worse.

Dr. Benjamin Winters, a Texas-based orthodontist better known as "The Bentist" on TikTok, shared his perspective on how something as simple as whitening strips can cause so much pain.

"Whitening [strips] can make your teeth super, super sensitive," Dr. Winters says in the same video. "If you leave them on all night long, good luck."

Dr. Winters explains that if this ever happens to you, the damage to your teeth most likely isn't permanent. He recommends using a teeth remineralization gel to help build your teeth's strength back up. "Smear it on your teeth and let it sit for a while," he says.

He also recommends smearing a sensitive teeth-friendly toothpaste like Sensodyne on your teeth, and letting it sit for roughly 15 minutes.

How does it work? "It helps plug up all of your dental tubules back up, stopping stuff from getting to your nerve endings as easily, making [your teeth] not as sensitive," he says, in this case, cold and hot drinks that can exacerbate tooth pain.

The good news, your sensitive teeth won't last forever. The bad news, it's definitely easy to go overboard with whitening strips. Take Dr. Winters advice and don't overdo it.
