On the seaside and away from the busy, built-up central part of Malta, St. Paul’s Bay is a popular place to stay and visit for both locals and tourists, particularly in summer.
The cluster of towns is home to many expats, and there’s a good choice of international restaurants and hotels, particularly in Buġibba and Qawra.
St. Paul’s Bay itself was once a small traditional fishing village, and you can still spot traces of the town’s history in several places. Nowadays, especially after Buġibba and Qawra developed, it’s a town where mostly locals’ holiday in their summer flats and it’s still the quietest of the three towns, relatively speaking.
In St. Paul’s Bay itself, there are only a few options for accommodation, so it’s worth searching and booking early on so you don’t miss out on the best deals. Self-catering/holiday lets are a more popular choice though if you prefer a hotel, Buġibba and Qawra have plenty to offer and they’re within walking distance from St. Paul’s Bay.
A big plus: Wherever you choose to stay, tourist facilities are always nearby, and the seaside will never be more than a 10-minute walk away.
You can take a stroll along the famous promenade, which stretches three kilometres along the coast from the top of Qawra to the south of St. Paul’s Bay. With plenty of pubs, restaurants and gelaterias dotted along the promenade, you’ll have plenty of choices for grabbing a drink or a meal.
There’s a nice nightlife scene in summer, and you’ll always find pubs, sports bars, clubs and a casino within walking distance.

How to get to St. Paul’s Bay
From the airport to St. Paul’s Bay
From the airport to St. Paul’s Bay is 20 kilometres. If you take a taxi or have a rental car, this takes around half an hour to an hour depending on traffic. Head towards Haz-Zebbug, Mdina, Mosta and then St. Paul’s Bay.
By bus, the trip approximately takes an hour and a half. The bus stops are right in front of the airport. Take route X1 towards Cirkewwa and get off in St. Paul’s Bay.
From St. Julian’s to St. Paul’s Bay
St. Julian’s is about 12 kilometres away from St. Paul’s Bay. By taxi or rental car, this should take about 20 minutes following the Coast Road.
By bus, the trip takes around 30 minutes. Take route 212, 222 or 225 from Spinola Bay towards Buġibba and get off at Imhasel bus stop.
From Sliema to St. Paul’s Bay
Sliema is 12 to 15 kilometres away from St. Paul’s Bay, depending on the route. It’s a 20 to 30-minute drive by taxi or rental car. For the inland route, head towards San Ġwann, Iklin, Burmarrad and then St. Paul’s Bay.
By public transport, the trip will take around 30 to 40 minutes. Take bus routes 212, 222 or 225 towards Ċirkewwa and get off the bus at Imhasel.
From Valletta to St. Paul’s Bay
St. Paul’s Bay is nearly 20 kilometres away from Valletta, which takes around half an hour by taxi or rental car past Msida, Iklin, Naxxar, Burmarrad and eventually St. Paul’s Bay.
By bus, it takes about 45 minutes to an hour. Take bus routes 31, 41, 42, 45, 48, 49 or 250 towards Buġibba and get off in St. Paul’s Bay.

Il-Bajja tax-Xama
There is a tiny beach called Il-Bajja tax-Xama, where you can go for a quick dip. This small, sandy patch might not be a beach as you know it, but it’s good to cool down on a hot summer day. Descend the limestone stairs to arrive at the little bay.
Golden Bay & Riviera Bay
You can get to some of Malta’s most stunning sandy beaches in just a 30-minute bus ride from St. Paul’s Bay. Take route 223 or 225 to Għajn Tuffieħa from Buġibba Bay 1 and get off at the final stop. Golden Bay is right there, and Riviera Bay is a short walk down the road.

Xemxija Heritage Trail
Starting behind Porto Azzurro Aparthotel in Xemxija, this heritage trail takes you past some of Malta’s most interesting attractions. The 2000-year-old Roman Road leads you to caves, remains of Neolithic temples, and it has views for days. Get a free map of the Xemxija Heritage Trail at Buġibba Tourist Info Point or St Paul’s Bay Local Council or find your way around by following the signposts that are all over the area.
Mistra Bay
Northeast of Xemxija you will find Mistra Bay, which is surrounded by a beautiful area with several sights. Start at Kalkara Ravine and make your way in the direction of Selmun Palace. Follow the road to Fort Campell, then return to Mistra Bay passing the Mistra Battery.
St. Paul’s Islands
Another beautiful hike passes the St. Paul’s Islands. Starting from Mistra, hike your way past the coast towards the Shipwreck Window. Head further up north to see the beautiful Blata il-Bajda and follow the trail back past Fort Campell.
Il-Wardija
Southwest of St. Paul’s Bay, il-Wardija is waiting to be explored. The peaceful area has the most amazing views, so make sure to hike your way up to the highest point. It is home to a chapel and a Castello built by the Knights of Malta, and the untouched nature is a sight worth seeing.
