Chester Family Dentistry Blog How to Extend the Results of Teeth Whitening
Did you know that teeth whitening is the most requested cosmetic dental procedure? And it’s no wonder, since the procedure can make your teeth dramatically brighter and up to three shades whiter. Unfortunately, though, if you don’t take care of your teeth, they can yellow again over time.
The professional team at Chester Family Dentistry, led by Dr. Ana Chester and Dr. Amy Caicco, is here to help you with all your cosmetic and general dentistry needs. That’s why we’ve compiled this helpful guide on how to extend the results of your teeth whitening treatment.
Ditch the staining foods
Staining foods and beverages can have a serious yellowing effect on your teeth. These are foods that are darkly colored and/or highly acidic. They include food and drink like:
- Wine
- Coffee
- Tea
- Soy sauce
- Balsamic vinegar
- Tomato-based sauces
- Curry
- Berries
- Beets
- Soda
- Candy
While you don’t have to completely cut these foods out of your diet, it might be a good idea to limit them and to brush your teeth after consuming them. Many foods and beverages on this list are rich in antioxidants and health-friendly.
You may also want to drink any staining beverages through a straw, or switch to iced coffees and teas, to better protect your teeth.
Practice proper oral hygiene
The best way to maintain your whitening results is to regularly practice good oral hygiene. This means that you’ll want to brush your teeth twice a day and floss once a day before bed. You’ll also want to keep your regular dental appointments, at least once every six months.
Switch to a whitening toothpaste
If you want to help maintain your results daily, you may want to consider switching to a whitening toothpaste. Remember to be careful, however, if you have sensitive teeth and worn enamel, since these toothpastes can cause sensitivity.
Avoid smoking
Tobacco smoke definitely stains your teeth. Smoking leads to a yellow buildup that forms on your teeth, causing stains that are difficult to remove. This can make your whitening procedure take longer to complete as well.
Schedule touch ups
You’ll want to schedule maintenance appointments about every six months or so to have the best chance of maintaining your whitening results. Having regular whitening appointments helps you get ahead of teeth staining, managing it before it progresses.
If you’re someone who smokes and drinks a lot of coffee, tea, or soda regularly, then you may want to schedule your touch ups more often, about every three months or so.
