A Fun Beef Casserole Recipe For Parties!

I mean, heck yes you can make this Cheeseburger Casserole Recipe for dinner for your kids, but for party food? This one’s a show stopper.

You’ve got a beefy, cheesy filling that all on it’s own is to die for, topped with more cheese and mini slider buns! The buns get toasted in the oven and make the most delicious topping for this cheeseburger casserole.

Sort of like a loose meat sloppy joe sandwich in casserole form? The slider buns on top do give it that feel, but what a way to serve mini burgers or sloppy joe’s for a crowd! Just pile them into a casserole dish and bake!

Can I Make This Casserole Ahead Of Time?

Absolutely! Dinner recipes like this that can be prepped in advance are truly a lifesaver! You can make this casserole right up until the point of baking, cover it with foil and stash it in your refrigerator until you’re ready.

If you have the time, take it out of the refrigerator about 30 minutes before baking just to take the chill off, or you can just add a few more minutes to the cooking time.

Reheating this beef casserole is just as easy! The microwave will do the trick, or you can reheat in the oven to keep the slider buns crispier. The buns might get a little soft if you microwave them but definitely nothing to complain about.

Can I Swap Out Ground Turkey In This Recipe?

Again, absolutely! Nothing wrong with a turkey burger, am I right?

Ground turkey is leaner than ground beef, but if you get a really lean ground beef like a 95% lean mix there’s really not a whole lot of difference in the fat content. But a lot of people tend to shy away from beef for other health reasons so if that’s your thing then definitely use ground turkey instead.

What Other Ingredients Can I Add To This Casserole?

We kept this cheeseburger casserole pretty simple but there are lots of other ingredients that you can add to it!

  • Mushrooms
  • Black Olives
  • Bacon
  • Corn
  • Diced Peppers
  • Different Cheeses such as Mozzarella, American, Gruyere or Swiss

Another fun way we have finished off this casserole is to layer slices of American cheese on top instead of cheddar, our kids especially love it this way.

So whether you’re making this beef casserole for dinner or a party, or bringing to a friend’s house to drop off a meal, we just know that it’s going to be a hit!

Scale

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 3/4 cup diced onion
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • Fresh black pepper to taste
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 28 ounce cans diced tomatoes, drained
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup beef broth
  • 2 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  • 12 slider buns, tops only

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375˚.
  2. Add the oil to a large skillet and brown the onion for 3-4 minutes until softened. Next add the beef, breaking up as it browns until all the meat is cooked through and no longer pink. Drain any drippings from the pan.
  3. Add the tomato paste, working into the beef and onions, then add the salt, pepper, oregano, tomatoes, cream, broth and 1/2 cup of the cheese. Mix the filling together to combine and remove from the heat.
  4. Add the beef filling to a 1 quart 9″ x 13″ casserole dish. Cover the top of the filling with the remaining 2 cups of cheese and then the slider buns.
  5. Bake uncovered for 20-25 minutes until the cheese is melted and the filling is warmed though.
