Am I a Candidate for Zoom Whitening? | Cosmetic Dentists (1)

Do you ever feel self-conscious about dull, yellowed teeth? If so, it’s time to schedule an appointment with one of our cosmetic dentists in Wayland, Coopersville, and Cascade. During your visit, they’d be more than happy to help you explore your treatment options so you can start smiling with confidence. For a noticeably whiter smile in one appointment, we often recommend Zoom whitening.

The only way to know if you’re truly a candidate for Zoom whitening is to schedule an appointment with Robinson Dental.

In the meantime, here’s what you need to know about this popular procedure for in-office teeth whitening.

The Ideal Candidate for Zoom Whitening

The ideal candidate for Zoom teeth whitening is someone with surface-level stains. This would also be a person who takes good care of their teeth by brushing and flossing every day. Any cavities present would need to be treated prior to the Zoom whitening procedure to reduce sensitivity and ensure the overall health of your smile. Little to no tooth sensitivity is also ideal for someone seeking Zoom whitening treatment.

Stains From Fluorosis

Fluorosis is a condition where an overconsumption of fluoride creates deep staining in the structure of the teeth themselves. The level of staining and mottling depends on the level of fluoride intake during the patient’s formative years when their adult teeth were developing in the jaw.

Due to the nature of this staining, Zoom teeth whitening won’t make a difference in the appearance of teeth. Under these circ*mstances, our cosmetic dentists may recommend porcelain veneers or crowns for teeth that show when you smile and talk.

Special Considerations for Tooth Sensitivity

You may not be the best candidate for Zoom whitening if you experience tooth sensitivity. This is because it’s not uncommon for patients to experience “zingers” both during and after their whitening appointments. “Zingers” refer to brief flashes of pain that happen when the nerves inside your teeth react to the Zoom whitening procedure.

For patients who already have tooth sensitivity, teeth whitening can aggravate their condition and prolong their symptoms. Even if you don’t have tooth sensitivity, you may experience discomfort for up to two days after your appointment with us.

Most people don’t realize that their enamel is made up of microscopic tubules that lead directly to the nerves inside your teeth. These nerves are sensitive to temperature changes, which explains why you may feel discomfort when drinking something hot or cold.

Zoom dental whitening works by deeply penetrating the enamel, which is the white outer layer of your teeth. Unfortunately, a side effect of this process is having other substances penetrate the enamel and affect the nerves within.

There are many different causes for tooth sensitivity, such as untreated cavities and teeth grinding at night. For this reason, our cosmetic dentists will always review your medical history before recommending a treatment plan that includes Zoom teeth whitening.
